Suunto, a Finnish company, started to sell a wristwatch-like personal golf computer that uses satellite navigation.The product allows golfers to measure the distance from the tee to the hole and the length of each shot. It advises on the best clubs based on the golfer’s history, average length of shot and distance to the green.

Treasure hunting and geo-caching are becoming favorite sports in many U.S. States and European countries. Dedicated associations have been formed in the last years. In 2002 there were at least 127,000 active “caches” spread over 212 countries.A few thousand people are registered members of the “geo-caching” associations, and close to 100,000 people had already tried geo-caching. One location-based tag game is available in parts of Scandinavia and in Ireland. The game, developed by a Swedish company in cooperation with SignalSoft, and called It’s Alive, has people chasing each other through the streets, virtually gunning down complete strangers who are playing the same game.

By applying special GPS techniques a Canadian application team has opened the door for centimetre-level precision in outdoor sports such as canoeing. Several companies are about to offer services that integrate the provision of highly accurate displacement and velocity information.

In 2003 the Swiss canton of St. Gallen celebrated its bicentennial by deploying several landscape artworks. By using GPS, a surveying system and a precision agricultural device, kilometre-wide crop pictures were created. [1]
