Veridian is selling Veritracks, an electronic tagging systems that allows tracking of criminals around their neighbourhoods and comparing the information with recent crimes. It is estimated that the savings are in the order of € 50 a day per offender with respect to jail.

The Metropolitan Police Service of London with its 31,000 officers started the utilization of a new service based on the nationwide TETRA communications network in the summer of 2004.The communication unit integrates a GPS device so that an officer’s location can be accurately plotted by control room staff to optimise overall resource deployment.

Police and fire-fighters in the US began to use satellite navigation systems in training exercises to optimise their operations on the ground and in the air. During a simulation of a terrorist bomb explosion in south Los Angeles, a list of every fire station in the affected area appeared on the map with detailed information on roads, water supplies and buildings and a simulated “reverse 911” automatically began calling residents in the affected area to prepare them for evacuation.
