Federal authorities responsible for animals and livestock in Arkansas have invested in satellite navigation equipment to improve identification operations in emergency cases like foot-andmouth disease or poultry disease.

Trimble offers its AgGPS Autopilot system, based on differential satellite navigation.The system guides the agriculture vehicle between uniform rows for tilling, spraying and applying fertilisers.

The EC Joint Research Centre at Ispra is assessing the use of satellite navigation techniques for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) fraud monitoring which involves on the spot checks of agricultural areas that have been declared for CAP funding in order to verify their compliance with the terms under which aid has been granted.The MARS (Monitoring Agriculture with Remote Sensing) activities provide technical support expertise for the implementation, management and follow-up of the CAP.

The Agriculture Council has adopted a Regulation regarding the protection of livestock species during land journeys in the EU 25. Considering that 17 million of bovine, porcine, ovine and caprine species are crossing intra-european borders by road every year, considering that Regulation 3085/85 relating to road transport specifies maximum driving periods and minimum rest periods for road drivers, that livestock transport flows will increase in the coming years, it became necessary to regulate journeys for animals by monitoring and tracing road vehicles.The adopted Regulation requires that new road vehicles be equipped as from 1st January 2007 with a navigation system and that from 1st January 2009 onward, all means of transport also be equipped with GNSS.
