General role of international co-operation
Co-operation between companies of different countries can have several positive effects, and are therefore a widely used measure to improve business. They can be a door-opener for new export markets and increase the overall name recognition of a company. Furthermore, they stimulate important know-how transfer between the regions, and can be used to reach a certain critical mass for being in a better competitive situation against big players (e.g. in a tender). However, there are a number of entrepreneurial factors which have to be regarded, before agreeing to a co-operation with other companies. To find appropriate partners is a commercial process and depends on company policy. On the other hand, looking to the fragmented parts of European GNSS markets (fleet management, etc.), it might be helpful to initiate strong communication between the several players, in order to strengthen the respective market segments by easing the finding of right partners. This could be done by the establishment of industry forums on European level. One example is the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), which has been founded by a number of companies and organizations, in order to remove barriers from the mobile industry, like the lack of applications interoperability. A sideeffect of alliances like OMA is the improved communication between the different players who have similar interests. [1]
