Future trends and expected technological evolution - Effective development for long time development

One of the barriers that the satellite communications system must cope is how to provide the services at the optimal time. For the world first type of service system, it is important that the satellite communication service is started as soon as possible. However, generally speaking, it takes a long time to develop a satellite communications system, especially a satellite to develop new technologies with R&D. Since many new technologies need to be developed for the future large-capacity satellite, the length of development time tends to become longer.
For the R&D satellite case, it takes 10-15 years to be developed. The cause of taking such a long time depends on various factors. The major factors are enumerated in Table 1. Most of cause of long development time looks to be in the mission definition procedure. This procedure includes many elements from political issue to likelihood of the new and/or key technology development.

The development of the key technology could be accelerated by using small satellite which can be. launched every 1-3 years, because of its small project cost. The small satellite will be useful for a test-bed for space proof, space infrastmcture such as formation flight, rniniaturixation test of equipment, etc. Such an often chance of testbed would promote development of key technologies. The accumulation of the advanced technologies would accelerate the development of the future communication satellite. [1]
