American ownership of GPS - an excuse for not parteciping in this business today?
Certain companies today might not want to participate in this business because of the costs involved until this technology is mastered and competitive products can be built. What will change with the advent of GALILEO?
- It takes quite some experience to develop a competitive GPS receiver, even in its simplest form (which is an L1 code only receiver). The experience required is in the areas of RF, digital signal processing, data processing, spread spectrum, etc. GALILEO will require exactly the same technical competencies as GPS today. Therefore participating in the GALILEO chipset business will not be any different from playing in today’s GPS chipset business;
- If a company is not interested in the chipset technology but in an application based on satellite positioning, it can quite easily get such (GPS) chipsets already today at an affordable price for subsequent integration into a more complex product. Also this will not change with the availability of GALILEO and GALILEO chipsets.
When GALILEO will become a reality, and depending on the demand for GALILEO based products (either created by real user benefits or
mandated by government regulations), there will definitely be a market for GALILEO chipsets and GPS/GALILEO receivers. But access to this
market will not be any easier than to today’s GPS market.
If somebody sees an opportunity for a GALILEO based product, then he should start developing such a product now, using today’s GPS as a
basis in order to acquire the necessary competencies and skills. Waiting until GALILEO arrives might be too late to establish a new successful
business. [1]
